I generally replace the gasket each time after having a very bad experience with a Mitsubishi Galant with aluminum oil pan and the steel plug. They do recommend a new gasket each change, but I did it the way I had always done on steel panned engines and after almost stripping the pan to get a siezed plug out, I religously changed the gasket. Many gaskets are cheaper than one oil pan repair. I try to buy enough plug gaskets, the smaller of the 2 "O" rings, and oil filter for a year. some oil filter came with the large diameter "O" ring and others do not. The last independent shop here closed this spring and I bought up all their inventory before it was too late. Will have to plan ahead on trips to the big cities where they have a dealer or well stocked independent shops.
